What Is Tafsir?

Tafsir is the detailed explanation of the Quran: what each verse means, why it was revealed (asbab al-nuzul), and how to apply it today. While recitation teaches you to read the Quran correctly, Tafsir helps you understand what you read. Our teachers explain using authentic, widely accepted sources — such as Ibn Kathir, At-Tabari, Al-Qurtubi and As-Sa’di — in clear, modern language.

Every lesson stays anchored to the Arabic text itself, which you can follow along with on Quran.com. Your teacher moves at your pace: a short passage each class, the meaning word by word, then the lesson it carries for daily life. If you can already read the Quran, you are ready to begin.

What You Will Learn

  • Verse-by-verse meaning of selected Surahs, starting with short, frequently recited Surahs.
  • The background and context (asbab al-nuzul) of key verses.
  • Core themes of the Quran: tawheed, worship, character, and the stories of the Prophets.
  • The link between each Surah and practical lessons for daily life.
  • How to use trusted Tafsir sources responsibly.

What You Will Study — Level by Level

Level 1 — Juz Amma (the short Surahs). You begin with the Surahs you already recite in salah — Al-Fatihah, Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas and the rest of Juz Amma. Because you already know the words, the meaning lands quickly and every prayer immediately feels different.

Level 2 — The frequently recited Surahs. Surah Yasin, Al-Kahf, Al-Mulk, Ar-Rahman and Al-Waqi’ah — the Surahs most families read weekly. Understanding them transforms a habit you already have.

Level 3 — Thematic study. The core themes of the Quran: tawheed, worship, character and manners, the stories of the Prophets, and the reminders of the Hereafter. Your teacher connects verses across Surahs so the message fits together as one.

Level 4 — Independent understanding. By this stage you can open the Quran, read a passage and grasp its meaning and lesson with far less help. Your teacher moves from explaining to guiding.

You are never locked into a fixed syllabus. If you want to study one Surah in depth, or focus on the verses recited most in Ramadan, your teacher will build the plan around you.

Requirements:

  • You should be able to read the Quran (Nazra). No prior Arabic knowledge is required — your teacher adjusts to your level.
