What You Will Learn

  • The correct pronunciation (Makharij) of every Quranic letter.
  • The core Tajweed rules and how to apply them while reading, not just recite them from memory.
  • The rules of pauses (Waqf) and elongation (Madd).
  • Fluent, confident reading with correct rhythm.
  • Practical application of rules such as Ikhfaa, Idghaam, Iqlaab and Qalqalah.

Requirements:

  • No previous knowledge of Tajweed is required. If you cannot yet read the Arabic letters, your teacher will start you on Noorani Qaida first.

What Is Tajweed and Why It Matters

Tajweed means giving every letter of the Quran its right — its correct articulation point, length and characteristics. It matters because in Arabic a small change in pronunciation can change the meaning of a word entirely. Reciting with Tajweed protects the words of the Quran and is how recitation has been passed down, teacher to student, since it was revealed.

Allah instructs: “…and recite the Quran with measured recitation” (Surah Al-Muzzammil 73:4). That measured, precise recitation is exactly what this course teaches. You can follow the Arabic text alongside your teacher on Quran.com and practise the same passage during the week.

The Tajweed Rules You Will Master

Makharij — articulation points. Where each letter is produced: the throat, tongue, lips or nasal passage. Most pronunciation mistakes are really Makharij mistakes, so this comes first.

Noon Sakinah & Tanween. The four rules you will use most: Izhaar (clear), Idghaam (merging), Iqlaab (converting) and Ikhfaa (partial hiding with a nasal sound).

Meem Sakinah. Ikhfaa Shafawi, Idghaam Shafawi and Izhaar Shafawi — the lip rules.

Madd — elongation. The natural madd of two counts, and the secondary madd rules of four to six counts. Consistent timing is the mark of a good reciter.

Qalqalah & Ghunnah. The bounce on ق ط ب ج د, and the nasal sound held on noon and meem.

Waqf — stopping and starting. Where it is correct to pause so the meaning is never broken.
